Otay Mesa is a dynamic and rapidly developing area of the City of San Diego. It is at the very center of San Diego’s largest labor market – South County and Tijuana – a significant advantage to all manufacturing and other companies. Otay Mesa Port of Entry, the third busiest commercial port of entry on the Mexico-United States border, was opened in 1983, and was constructed primarily to divert growing commercial truck traffic. A second commercial border crossing, Otay Mesa East Port of Entry (POE), located between San Diego and Tijuana, approximately 2 miles east of the existing Otay Mesa Port of Entry is under construction. The project is being developed in three segments with segment 1 completed in March 2016. The first segment of State Route 11 is expected to facilitate cross-border commerce, ease congestion in Otay Mesa and reduce wait times at border crossings.

Customs Border and Protection (CBP)'s implementation of Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) by the end of 2016 is also expected to reduce wait times at border crossings.

Another major development in the area is the Metropolitan Airpark project, a public-private partnership between the City of San Diego and Brown Field International Business Park LLC. The 331 acres redevelopment include a new FBO, jet and small aircraft hangars, hotels, retail, and commercial space.
