Built in the Italianate style of the 1860s and contemporary with other buildings in this block, the Hotaling Annex West closely resembles the Hotaling office and warehouse across the alley (445 Jackson, Landmark #13). The brick walls are a foot thick. The earliest tenant of record, Dominic Small, a carpenter and builder, had his shop here in the 1870's. During WWII and through the 1950Õs, it housed artists and writers until it was fully converted to commercial space. It was one of the first buildings restored in the Jackson Square historic district.
