Justine Plantation Description
Justine was originally built on a sugar plantation on Bayou Teche in 1786. This plantation home, completely built of native Louisiana cypress by slave labor is a most picturesque and habitable old home. Additions to Justine were made twice over the years, once in 1848 and again in 1894. In 1965, Justine was moved by barge, 65 miles across the bayou, to a site near New Iberia. In 2003, the old plantation home was again moved by barge, down the Atchafalaya and Mississippi Rivers, then across Lake Pontchartrain to its old Mandeville location.
Once in place on the Lake Pontchartrain waterfront, the structure underwent a complete restoration, retaining its antebellum charm while acquiring state-of-the-art amenities. Recognized by FEMA as a flood mitigation best practice, the Justine Plantation made it through Hurricanes Katrina and Isaac virtually undamaged, surviving ten-foot-deep flood waters and hurricane-force winds. The building is now utilized as an exceptional office environment. One ornate dormer sits well framed in the middle of a high-pitched roof and directly over a stairway leading to the main door. A center Gothic double entrance stairway and eight creole-style columns add graceful elegance to the Louisiana country home.
