EASTERN ECHO - REPRINT 2007
The Owner, who opened the bar in 1980 came to the realization in recent years that his place was "being pigeonholed as a college bar," and in a lot of ways that was working against him. He didn't open daily until 10 p.m. and he no longer served food. Then he got to thinking about the limited dining options available to students and the folks with jobs on or near campus who were looking for a place to "decompress and watch the game after work."
He decided it was time to give his place a much-needed makeover.
Theo's closed its doors at the end of June 2007 and reopened that September with new hours (opening daily at 5 p.m.) a full-service kitchen, a fresh coat of paint, new furniture and an open floor plan to create a clean, spacious, friendly gathering place with weekly events for local college students, and everyone else in the community.
The "new" Theo's isn't meant in any way to discourage students from patronizing his establishment - to the contrary, he said "it's the young people who keep me on my toes and have kept me in business for nearly 30 years."
In fact, he's sustained longtime relationships with students who were regulars at his bar or worked for him years ago. "This is our family, and these are our kids." He's got all kinds of stories about the wedding invitations and birth announcements or e-mails and phone calls "to just check in" that he's received over the years. "I want this place to be somewhere they want to come back to," he said.
Judging by the turnout on a recent Thursday, the new business plan is appealing to a good cross-section of people - younger, older, students, professional and working-class. WWW.THEOSBAR.COM
