This unique historic building at the heart of Downtown Lakeland is ideal for an owner/user or mixed-use development. The Kress Building is over 26,000 square feet on three floors plus a mezzanine. The construction is a steel frame with a brick bearing wall system, and there is an adjacent city parking garage.
Built circa 1929, the Kress Building is a beautiful example of the Renaissance Revival style. As one of a series of buildings constructed for the S.H. Kress & Co. chain, the Lakeland Kress Building was designed by the architectural team of MacKay and Seibert.
Mr. Seibert led a design team commissioned to produce Kress buildings in many communities, with each structure custom-designed to fit its location and community size. Its formal and elaborate facade was typical of period Kress buildings and made of terracotta, Seibert's preferred finish material. Seibert was known for his use of terracotta, and his work is visible across the country. Mr. Seibert is said to have retired to Lakeland.
Its original owner occupied the Kress Building until about 1978. It was then renovated internally for use as Polk County's Lakeland Branch Courthouse. It has since been owned and occupied by Explorations V, Lakeland's Childrens' Museum, which has grown and is now building a new facility at Bonnet Springs Park.
Because of its historical significance, the Kress Building is qualified to receive a 20% Federal Investment Tax Credit for significant renovations and restorations. This space offers accomodations for: street retail.
